Course Name: Regents Chemistry
Instructor: Gordon Maccalum Contact Time: 8:12-8:53 or 12:27-1:08 Phone Ext: 1415
Grading Policy
Lab 15%
Quizzes: 20%
Tests: 20%
Homework: 15%
Classwork: 30%
Homework Policy
There will be 1-2 homework assignments every week. These assignments will be short but important practice. Late homework will be accepted with a penalty. The penalty will be assigned at my discretion, based on the assignment and how late the work was received. The penalty will range from 10-50% of the assignment’s total points.
Test Policy
Tests will happen at the completion of a unit. They will be longer than quizzes, take the entire class time for that day, and be based on 2-3 weeks of material. You will need to study to perform well on tests. You may do corrections on tests to earn back 50% of the lost points.
Quiz Policy
Quizzes will happen every Friday unless there is a test or a shortened week. They will be short (10-15 mins) and based on that week’s class material. You may do corrections on quizzes to earn back 50% of the lost points.
Projects
Lab: Labs are done in a separate period that meets 3 days a cycle. Lab grades will account for 15% of your class grade. In addition to impacting your average, lab is also necessary to be eligible for the regents exam. If you do not achieve 1200 minutes of lab time by the end of the year, you will be ineligible to take the regents exam, regardless of your class average.
Classwork: Assignments that are meant to be done during class will be graded as classwork. Classwork is typically bell work, participation with notes, practice during class, and tickets out the door. Classwork will be graded valuing effort over correctness. Each day you can earn one possible classwork point and will lose ½ a point each time I find you not actively participating.
Course Outline
Chemistry is the study of matter at its most simple level and how that matter can change. This course will offer students a fundamental understanding of the world around them, and give them a background to deal with the complex problems of the world today. Development of reasoning skills and problem-solving strategies will benefit all students in further science coursework and other aspects of their lives. Student success with course material will prepare students for their end of the year Regents Exam and for introductory college chemistry. This course includes a laboratory portion that will have opportunities for students to use hands-on science techniques. The class will meet every day and lab will meet A-C or D-F days.
