1970-1971
Due
to ill health, Mr. Ernest Zeferjahn retired and Mr. . Russell Guest was Acting
Principal.
1971-1972
Mr. Martin O’Donnell was appointed the principal… Girls
were coming back to Tech.
1973-1974
Upon Mr. Guest’s retirement, Mr. John T. Butler took over
as assistant principal.
1974-1975
Mr.
Martin O’Donnell, having retired due to ill health, the new principal is Mr.
Anthony D. Vetrano. He had been our guidance counselor several years ago.
1975-1976
Tech observed America’s Bicentennial by making a Liberty pole, a metal replica
of the one in the village of early Buffalo on the Terrace. With appropriate ceremony, it was erected on
the school lawn June 4, 1976.
1978-1979
Courses
offered at Tech were these: Computer Electronics, Computer Science, Mechanical
Technology, Building Technology, Electrical Technology, Industrial Chemistry,
and Engineering College Preparatory. All
meet college entrance requirements anywhere.
The
history of Hutch Tech High School in during the ninth decade reflects human values
at their best, i.e., fidelity of purpose and ever rising educational
standards. Educators here continue to
teach students the fundamental knowledge and skills necessary to pursue
lifelong careers and to meet the challenge endemic to Technical and Science
fields.
1980
Chester T. Bijak's sudden death saddened all and left a void at Hutch Tech.The New York
State Department of Education in Albany required the services of Donald Guerra,
Guidance Counselor and Norman Streit, Materials Testing teacher as members of
the Futuring Committee on Technical Education.
1981
Dr.
Virginia M. Foley, was the first female Assistant Principal appointed to Hutch
Tech High School...The Beta Sigma Phi was formally established as the girls'
honors sorority with Patricia Krasinski, as the founding moderator. Principal Anthony D. Vetrano founded this
organization in order to equalize academic recognition and leadership
opportunities and incentives for female students.
1982
Hutch Tech sponsored the rededication of Johnson Park to
honor the first Mayor of Buffalo, Dr. Ebenezer Johnson, as its contribution to
the Civic Sesquicentennial Celebration of the chartering of Buffalo as a city in
1832...The faculty placed a commemorative plaque on a pastoral monument, which
was dedicated by the Honorable James Griffin, Mayor of Buffalo in a civic
ceremony on June 2, 1982, in Johnson Park...The first mayor once owned the land
comprising Johnson Park and the parcels on which the school is built.
1983
Administrative
and faculty efforts, were focused on the Reregistration Program...This program,
under the direction of the New York State Department of Education and the
Buffalo Board of Education, was a long-term school evaluation process which
began in the Fall of 1983 and continued until 1985...It required each
department to compare and critique its educational program with regard to state
norms and then to compose and write new programs of instruction which would
either remediate or upgrade the educational process.
1984
John Butler, Assistant Principal, began a well earned
retirement...Anthony E. Leone became our new Assistant Principal...A Back to
School Night for Alumni and Friends on May 18th marked the Eightieth Anniversary
Celebration of Technical Education in Buffalo.
1985
Inauguration of the Interlibrary Loan Program allowed
Hutch Tech students access to resources in all types of libraries at the local,
state and federal levels.
1986
Joseph
F. Gentile became Principal of Hutch Tech High School after Anthony D. Vetrano
left to assume the duties of Director of Vocational Education of the Buffalo
Public Schools...The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc.
honored Hutch Tech and Senior Anthony Bartowiak with its prestigious Horatio
Alger Scholarship Award in ceremonies at which many civic and business leaders
were present...The interior of the school began to take on a new look and
life...Under the direction of Mr. Gentile and the guidance of Thomas Latham,
Building Technology teacher, attractive bulletin boards were designed and
installed throughout the school and striking murals painted by students adorn
the basement areas.
1987
Nicholas
DiPirro became Assistant Principal of Hutch Tech when Anthony Leone took up
duties of Assistant Principal at Seneca Vocational High School...Terrence
McHenry, who had taught Social Studies at the school for 26 years, passed away
after a long illness and was mourned by all who had known him. In his memory, the McHenry Memorial Run was
established for the benefit of the McHenry Scholarship Fund...A Biotechnology
Core, under the direction of Sanford Morris, was started in 1987...To celebrate
the Bicemtennial Anniversary of the Constitution of the United States of
America, Tech students received a first place award from the Honorable Henry
Nowak, Congressional Representative for outstanding achievement in the Student
Congressional Hearing on the History and Principles of the Constitution.
1988
The Hutchinson Central Technical Alumni Association was
formed and elected Mr. Wayne Kroll as the first president...Hutch Tech was one
of 3 local school to receive the New York State School of Excellence Award at
ceremonies which we sponsored by the New York State Board of Regents in
Albany...The Tech Court Room was founded by Gary Eckert...Faculty and students
mourned the deaths of Harvey Austin, a Physical Education teacher and Anthony
Leone, who had left the faculty a few months before...The monetary value of
scholarships received by Tech's 1988 graduates tripled, having totaled $662,876.
1989
Hutch
Tech has been nominated for the prestigious "Nation School of Excellence
Award" which is given only to quality schools by the United States
Department of Education...Mr. Gary Kanaley replaced Mr. Kroll as Alumni
President...Alfred Boyd, who taught Freshman class in Heat Treatment and
Exploratory Shop, passed away and was mourned by all...The Department of
Computer Technology now has State-of-the-Art equipment which includes
microcomputers and mainframes. Computer
Technology is at present a major course of study for one hundred students. All freshmen now take an Introductory
Programming course.
Coming Soon - the 1990's and the 21st Century
The
same strong commitment to technical education, which bonded the Technical High
School faculties of earlier years, is required of the present faculty, and
certainly will be necessary if future educational staff is to keep Hutchison
Central Technical high School responsive to the needs of the community.
